NYCB stands for New York City Ballet. Founded in the year 1948. The founders Mr. George Balanchine and Lincon Kirstein had the dream to make NYCB world-renowned Ballet Company and their dream came true as the company is in the list of foremost dance companies in the world.
Lincoln Kirstein established the Ballet Company with the vision to provide young dancers an opportunity to learn unique dance techniques. This company has had the greatest Ballet masters. Ballet itself is a graceful dance keeping the power to take you to another world. Different Ballet styles attract people to explore more and more about it.
In 1948 the company began regular performances at New York City Centre and it moved to David Koch theatre at Lincon Centre to performing arts in 1964. Since 1966 the Saratoga Performing Arts Centre in Saratoga Springs N.Y. has been NYCB’s summer headquarters.
Balanchine devoted his life to NYCB and after this death in 1983 peter Martins, as well as Jerome Robbins, worked together for the advancement of Balanchine’s heritage. Martin had his own vision for the company and he adopted modern forms of Ballet together with contemporary and classical forms.
Specific Ballet Style
In its early years, it follows a contemporary and classical Ballet style. Balanchine had a great knowledge of music as well as Ballet. Under his guidance company grew day by day. NYCB choose its dancers only from American Ballet. It has more than 100 Ballet dancers. Also, the 66 member Orchestra, an important classical institution, known for its versatility. It has been performing thousands of performances over the decades. The orchestra always accompanies the Ballet on all of its North American tours. Besides the members of the orchestra, it has 6 pianists on full-time staff and they perform with the orchestra on a regular basis.
Apart from teaching Ballet dancing itis also an organization that helps disabled children by organizing workshops for disabled children with physical disabilities. It is dedicated to creating quality dancers as well as encouraging a new generation of dancers and choreographers. It is also known for excellence and affordable performance for new audiences. In order to pay tribute to Balanchine, the company performs the Nutcracker at Saratoga every year.
